Day for Persons with Disabilities

So at 8.30am Anna and i were suddenly told we were to be off!

We had to help the dance troops (boys group and girls group who went to Madurai) get ready. Which meant tying a lot of jewelry on super quick.

Another cramped 7 person auto ride got us the the Dance theater. It was really busy with disabled visitors.

Quick make-up session before the girls were on stage.

The girls did us proud!
Other local schools and NGOs for the disabled performed. Very inspiring stuff.

Boys did very well too.
The Hall was beautifully decorated with lots of fresh flowers.

There was a lot of speeches too, in Telugu but the pupils translated for me. Talks about the struggles peoples with disabilities in India. The speeches were translated into sign language for the deaf audience members.

The Chief Minister for the Department of Disabilities and Pensions was the guest of honor. He made a speech, which caused a uproar. There was people shouting and protesting in the rows behind us who had to be dragged out by the police. So that was a surprising turn of events. He didn't seem phased by it and soldiered on.

It was a great celebration of people with disabilities. The recent dance competition and today have really shown me the capabilities and dedication people can have. They don't let a disability hold them back. They can do things that I can't (like look good while dancing) and overall it was really inspiring.

India is known for not being very accepting of disabled people but today was the opposite. There is a lot of people who are really passionate about rights for the disabled.

Then back to school and teaching like we'd never been gone.
